iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus Price in India and Launch Date Revealed

In what was perhaps the worst-kept secret of recent times, Apple lifted the wraps off the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in San Francisco on Wednesday. While India is not in the first batch of countries that will get the new iPhone models next week, the iPhone and iPhone 7 Plus will launch in India on October 7. Price in India starts at Rs. 60,000 for the iPhone 7, with no word yet on India price of other models.

In the US, the iPhone 7 starts at $649 (approximately Rs. 43,000) for the new 32GB entry-level variant, doing away with the 16GB model, while the iPhone 7 Plus start at $769 (approximately Rs. 51,000) for same 32GB storage. Apple has also doubled the storage variant on other models, with 128GB and 256GB models now rounding up the lineup. Pre-orders open this Friday in select countries shown in the image below and the new iPhone models will ship in these regions on September 13.

The latest iPhone models comes with a new design, doing away with the antenna lines at the back, and they will be available in two new colours: (matte) black, jet (glossy) black, in addition to gold, silver, and rose gold, seen earlier. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus also feature a redesigned home button which is now solid-state and force-sensitive. It uses Taptic vibrations instead of a physical click, just like the trackpad on the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro models. Apple has also added IP67 water and dust resistance, a first for the iPhone series.
(Also seeApple Watch Series 2 With Water Resistance, GPS Launched)

There are camera improvements, with the iPhone 7 also getting optical image stabilisation (OIS). There's a new 6-element f/1.8 aperture lens with 12-megapixel sensor and quad-LED with True Tone Flash. A new 7-megapixel front camera is included as well. The newest iPhone models come with a new image processing engine, which, Apple claims, delivers better, faster pictures.

The iPhone 7 Plus packs in the widely rumoured dual rear camera setup - one 56mm telephoto lens and the other wide-angle lens. The bigger iPhone is also capable of 2x optical zoom, with total zoom up to 10x.
(Also see: Apple's iPhone 7 Launch Event: 10 Big Announcements)
The new iPhone models comes with a 25 percent brighter display with a wider colour gamut and improved colour management. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are powered by a new A10 Fusion 64-bit quad core chip, which is 40 percent faster than the A9, and more power efficient, which means the new models have the "best battery life ever" on an iPhone.
The speakers in iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are stereo - one at the bottom, and one at the top, and twice as loud as their predecessors.
As expected, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus also ditch the headphone jack. Apple will use the Lightning port for audio. Each new iPhone model will come with bundled Lightning EarPods, and a Lightning-to-3.5mm audio adapter, so you can use your old headphones.

Apple also introduced new AirPods for wireless audio experience, which will not be bundled with the iPhone models. They pair easily with your Apple devices, thanks to the W1 chip inside new Apple devices that's used for wireless communication. They are rated to delivery 5 hours of battery life, up to 24 hours with the included charging case that is also used for carrying them around.

Report: Facebook is paying more than $50 million to publishers and celebs for live streaming

Facebook's live streaming platform is proving to be a significant source of cash for some media companies.
The social network is paying out more than $50 million to publishers and celebrities who produce content for Facebook Live, according to "a document" reviewed by the Wall Street Journal
Facebook has contracts with close to 140 publishers and celebrities, the report saidFacebook made deals with several media partners (including Mashable) following the launch of its live streaming platform last summer, but the value of these deals was previously unknown.
The terms of each "varies wildly," according to the Wall Street Journal, but BuzzFeed's deal is the most valuable at $3.05 million. In total, at least 17 are worth more than $1 million, including deals with the New York Times and CNN.
Facebook is also paying a handful of celebrities to live stream, including Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, actor Kevin Hart and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, along with YouTube stars and institutions like the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
Under the contracts, publishers and celebs agree to produce a set number of broadcasts using Facebook Live. How much a publisher is paid for these broadcasts depends on how big their audience is and how many videos they agree to make, the report says.
Facebook has high hopes for the platform, which it opened up to all its users earlier this year. Eventually, the network plans to sell ads against its video streams and is using its current deals with publishers and other influential users to jumpstart engagement with the service.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the list of partners and contracts it reviewed didn't include all of the social network's live streaming deals, so Facebook is likely spending more than $50 million on these partnerships — something that could make Twitter-owned Periscope take notice.

Percentage of firms planning job cuts in GCC revealed

Dubai: A growing number of companies in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region are making some job cuts, employment market specialists have confirmed.
GulfTalent, in its latest report based on the feedback of 700 employers and 25,000 professionals in the region, revealed that Saudi Arabia tops the list in terms of the number of private sector firms planning to implement redundancies this year, at 14 per cent.
Second on the list is Oman, where 10 per cent of companies intend to trim their workfoce, followed by the UAE (9 per cent) and Qatar (8 per cent). GulfTalent could not find sufficient data for Kuwait and Bahrain.
“An increasing number of firms have been reducing headcount, particularly in [the] energy and construction [sectors],” the firm said in a statement sent to Gulf News.
There will also be a “marked slowdown” in recruitment activity. “Employers [are] much more cautious in adding to their payroll. Much of the recruitment activity is now focused on replacement hiring only,” said the report.
However, experts assured that the UAE remains one of the resilient economies in the region. In fact, nearly half (48 per cent) of residents in the UAE have a very positive outlook on the future of the country's economy, according to a separate survey by Bayt.com.
Besides, GCC states are expected to have stable currencies and register a positive economic growth in 2016, with governments using their reserves to maintain critical investments.
Certain sectors, including retail, have also experienced only “limited impact”, while other industries are still offering employment opportunities. The medical industry, in particular, is booming, with nearly seven in ten (68 per cent) companies in the healthcare business reporting an increase in their headcount during 2015.
Sectors affected
Michael Gilmore, managing partner for property and construction at Morgan McKinley in Dubai, said “hundreds” of payroll reductions were reported in the construction sector alone during the first three months of the year.
“It’s clear that there have been hundreds of job cuts in the first quarter of this year in the UAE across developers and consultancies in Abu Dhabi and Dubai,” Gilmore told Gulf News.
“We will continue to see job cuts across the construction industry with firms that lack a proven track record and quality in the region, while well-known firms will continue to win mega tenders and hire cautiously.”
Gilmore noted that within the construction industry, companies “have become increasingly cautious” in recruiting new talent. Some developers now also prefer to hire UAE nationals, further limiting the opportunities for expatriates.
“The price of hiring the wrong person has become more pronounced. Established developers are doing their utmost to retain top talent within their organisation, however, some developers are once again becoming more Emiratisation focused.”
“Contractors do not have the luxury of retaining top talent as their reliance is on developers and the interiors market has been affected entirely while they are the last phase of construction chain. The market is investing in commercial teams and sales teams rather than operations teams, which tells us there is very little delivery in the current market.”
Still positive
However, there are still employment opportunities and job postings have not posted significant declines. “There has been increased interest in [Ras Al Khaimah] with increased employment across construction and manufacturing. It’s not a complex market, projects are being constantly tendered for across the UAE and the established firms are suffering in these tenders and downsizing.”
Despite the “marked slowdown”,  GulfTalent  assured that the situation in the region remains “far more stable than in most other oil-dependent economies.”
Quoting the Economist Intelligence Unit, the report said that all GCC economies are forecast to achieve economic growth in 2016.
“This is in sharp contrast to Russia where the oil price collapse has already led to severe recession and a 50 per cent plunge in the value of the currency since 2014.”
Salaries across the region are still expected to rise, but at a slower pace, this year. Overall wages are forecast to increase by 5.2 per cent, down from 5.7 per cent in the previous year.
In Saudi Arabia, salaries could go up by 5.9 per cent, the highest in the region.  UAE employees can expect pay adjustments of about 5.3 per cent, while Qatar workers will likely get 4.7 per cent increase. In Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, salaries could rise by 4.6 per cent, 4.4 per cent and 3.7 per cent, respectively.
GulfTalent’s Employment and Salary Trends report is also based on 60 interviews with executives and human resources (HR) professionals between December 2015 and February 2016.

6 TIPS TO GET YOUR CV NOTICED

Making your CV stand out from the crowd in order to secure that first interview can be difficult. How do you ensure you are noticed? Susie Timlin, Global Director of People & Culture – Hays Talent Solutions, offers advice on how you can achieve this.
In a competitive recruitment process other candidates may be more qualified than you on paper, which is why it is important to understand that the direct purpose of your CV is to secure an interview and not the job. Hays as a business receives over eight millions CVs a year, with an average of 250 per role, so standing out on paper is essential. That means at this stage of the process, getting a foot in the door needs to be the main focus of your CV.
Susie offers six pieces of advice to put you ahead of the pack.
1. Your personal statement
“A concise personal statement directly beneath your contact details provides employers with a snapshot of your key skills and work ambitions. It’s the first place an employer is likely to look, so succinctly detail your proudest achievements here.”
2. Matching the job description
“Try to use adjectives that are similar to those used in the job advertisement, without replicating it word for word. If the employer prioritises someone with “effective leadership skills” then make sure you demonstrate yours during the early part of your personal statement.”
3. Avoid clichés
“Remember that employers are interested in tangible evidence of your abilities, not just a list of overused adjectives. It’s not enough to just say that you’re hardworking, loyal and a good team player, you need to be able to demonstrate it with solid evidence.”
4. Provide hard evidence of your achievements
“Similarly, when listing achievements, keep in mind that what really impresses employers is data. If you can illustrate your achievements with facts and figures – how much revenue you brought to the business that year, how much the client increased their investment by and so on – then do.
“You can do so by being specific with your numbers and data. Consider the differing impact of the following two statements: 1. I consistently exceeded sales targets in my last year. 2. I exceeded sales targets in the last four quarters by x%, resulting in an overall annual increase in turnover of £x.”
5. Put yourself in the thick of the action
“Remember that you are trying to sell yourself. Using phrases like ‘was involved in’ and ‘assisted’ implies that you were more of a bystander than an instigator – recruiters pick up on these things. Use strong action verbs and take credit where credit is due.
“A couple of caveats, however: never claim involvement in something that had nothing to do with you and don’t bad mouth former colleagues or employers – this is one of the most frequently cited reasons for candidate rejection.”
6. Make it accessible
“Finally, and perhaps the most obvious but often overlooked point, is to make your CV as accessible as possible. Send the document over as a PDF so there is no chance of the hirer not being able to view it, make sure all the font is of a legible size and ensure your contact details are current and correct. Recruiters appreciate a streamlined process and will reward you favourably for it!”
Susie offers one final thought on the subject “Of the many CVs I review each week it’s those which are clear, concise and accessible which I appreciate most. Build your CV around a few key achievements which relate directly to the job advertisement and you’ve got every chance of progressing to the next stage of the process.”

How to pass a job interview in Dubai

We’ve all been there, sitting in the waiting room pretending to look cool and nonchalant, wearing our best with a pack of CVs in one hand and a palm load of sweat in the other. Going for a job interview can be an anxious experience for many of us. But to overcome the – perfectly natural – sense of anxiety, have you ever tried changing the way you look at interviews?
Gulf News Guides spoke with Gareth Clayton, Senior Director at Charterhouse, Dubai. An experienced HR and recruitment consultant, Gareth has over 15 years experience dealing with interviews.
“Interviews are an integral part of your job search; it is the ultimate opportunity to sell yourself on a face-to-face basis”, says Gareth. “They should not be viewed as a one-sided interrogation with relentless questioning; rather they should be experienced as an open forum for two-way information flow.”
Be Prepared
Of course, it goes without saying that prior to any job interview it is imperative that you do your homework on the company, and that goes beyond just learning the address; preparation is the key. Gareth says that “Preparation is the first essential step towards a successful interview. There is no excuse for a candidate possessing little or no information about the company with whom they are interviewing.”
It’s important to research the company, and to understand its products and services as well as the location of its various offices and plants. To really impress, you can go further by investigating its future growth opportunities, such information is generally accessible from documents and publications on the company’s annual report, corporate website, or even its business publications.
Being able to talk confidently about this information will show you in a very good light.
What should you wear to an interview?
It goes without saying that you should dress conservatively for any job interview, regardless of what the position might be, and regardless of what type of company it is.
Whether you like it or not, it is still a person’s prerogative to judge someone by their attire and personal hygiene and since the very core of an interview is based on judgment, you have to make a good impression.
Scrappy shoes and a creased shirt won’t look very good, and those turning up in jeans and a t-shirt may as well look elsewhere.
What other traits do interviewers look for in their candidates?
Interviewers will have a pre-determined set of questions to ask you, but there are also countless other areas which will make all the difference. In reality, the interview starts the moment you walk through the office door, before you’ve even met your prospective employer. It is, therefore, crucial that you arrive on time.
Gareth says quite clearly that you must “Arrive on time, having previously checked the address and exact location of the interview.” He says that it’s also important to “Know the interviewer's correct title and the pronunciation of their name, and make and maintain eye contact, smile, and have a firm handshake.”
It is important to remember that the UAE is an Islamic country, and therefore the customary handshake is not always appropriate. Members of the opposite sex may not be keen to shake your hand, so wait for them to offer theirs first. It may not always be easy to gauge, but you should do your best to be as polite as possible.
Then there is the tricky business of small-talk; knowing what to say isn’t always easy, so stick to the basics, such as weather, and how easily you found the place. Gareth adds: “Use small talk to establish rapport, but let the interviewer initiate and lead this, as being over familiar at this stage could set the wrong tone”.
If you are offered tea or coffee then you should accept it, whether you’re thirsty or not; it is considered rude in Arabic custom to refuse such an offer. Accepting it will suggest that you are aware of local traditions.
What questions should you ask in an interview?
It is obvious that the interviewer will ask you a set of pre-determined questions, and then perhaps some bespoke ones that relate directly to your past experience and application. But remember what Gareth says: an interview is a two-way exchange.
It is crucial, therefore, that you go into your interview prepared with some questions of your own. Avoid asking about the salary, leave, and benefits. While these are important things to know, they should be asked at a later date if you succeed in the first round of interviews. Asking them straight away will make you appear selfish, and suggest that the job isn’t as important to you as it should be.
You should ask intelligent, meaningful questions, such as: Is this a newly created position? Why has the position become available? How would you describe the corporate culture? What are the company's plans for future development? Is there an induction or training programme for new recruits? What is the next step? These will make you appear – and under no false pretence – that you are interested in the company and are keen to gather as much information as possible.
An interviewer will be impressed to hear these questions.
What can you expect in an interview?
An interviewer is going to want to learn as much about you as possible, so knowing what to expect and how to conduct yourself is going to be important.
You must be prepared for technical questions. Saying that you have expert knowledge about one particular accountancy software is all well and good, but if you can’t explain how to perform a certain function with it then you will have been exposed.
It is also essential that you prepare relevant and recent examples of your work or achievements. You may not be asked, but it would look good if you can show the interviewer a personal portfolio on demand. Be warned, however, that using sensitive company information – such as your previous company’s accounts figures or web traffic figures – can be illegal, and interviewers will be well aware of that. Be smart as to how you demonstrate your work.
The interviewer is not only going to be assessing your work experience and qualifications, but also absorbing your personality and motivations. Gareth says that it’s important to come across as “keen, but not desperate”. Govern your passion, and don’t just heap meaningless praise on the company to which you are applying, being a sycophant will get you nowhere.
Crucially you can expect to be asked to explain certain career moves. At first glance, if it appears that you have worked for three companies in the space of six months, it suggests to the interviewer that you are either not going to be committed or you have been fired for – most likely – being unreliable.
That may not be the case, you could be so good at what you do that you have been head-hunted by bigger and better companies, or perhaps you have been unlucky with involuntary redundancy. Make sure your explanations are air-tight and justified.
Understand your SWOT
What is SWOT? SWOT is an acronym which stands for Strengths,Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. In short, you should write down a list of points under each heading which apply to you.
Strengths should be areas which make you stand out, not just assorted things you’re good at. If you are applying for a job as an accountant, then it is obvious that you are a capable mathematician. Saying that you’re “good at maths” won’t stand you apart from the rest. Talk about how well you communicate with clients, for example.
Weaknesses are much harder. Going into an interview and saying that you’re “always running late” will see you ushered out of the room. The trick is to try and turn your weakness into a positive, or at least to try and highlight a positive. To say that “I get nervous with public speaking; standing before a crowd means that I lose the ability to convey my passion” indicates that you are human, but still passionate about the job.
Don’t say things like “I work too hard”, “I take on too much”, or “I’m too ambitious” as this really doesn’t make any sense.
Opportunities are slightly trickier to identify. You could mention something along the lines of a recent seminar or event you attended, and that you got talking to a potential client. Or perhaps you have read of an upcoming project which is taking place nearby which you feel could help the company. Of course, you can note down several opportunities which you can keep to yourself for later on; such as learning from an experienced professional.
Threats are by far the hardest to identify, and aren’t always relevant when talking about yourself in an interview. You could identify the activities of rival companies. For example, what is the recruitment company next door doing differently? Is their approach working or not? Are they a threat to the company for which you are being interviewed? What ideas do you have to “beat them”?
Interview DOs and DON’Ts
Interview DOs
  1. Arrive on time, greet the interviewer by his or her title and surname and shake hands firmly (shake hands with an Arab national of the opposite sex only if they offer their hand first);
  2. Accept any offer of tea, coffee, or water;
  3. Wait until you are offered a chair before sitting. Sit upright in your chair and look alert and interested at all times;
  4. It is very important that you demonstrate your interpersonal skills during the interview. Try to be charismatic without being overly friendly;
  5. Be a good listener as well as a good talker;
  6. Look the interviewer in the eye and smile, let them feel that you are enjoying the process while taking it seriously;
  7. Follow the interviewer's leads and make sure that your good points get across to the interviewer in a concise, factual, and sincere manner. Waffle will get you nowhere;
  8. Conduct yourself as if you are determined to get the job you are discussing. Remember you cannot reject a job that you are not offered.
Interview DON’Ts
  1. Try not to be too friendly and do not answer questions with a simple ''yes'' or ''no''. Explain yourself whenever possible;
  2. Conversely do not ''over answer'' questions, make your comments relevant and to the point without waffling;
  3. Do not lie. Answer questions truthfully, frankly, and as close to the point as possible;
  4. Avoid making derogatory remarks about your present or former employers;
  5. Try not to use the term "we" when you are talking about your own achievements and avoid making very general statements that lack any real substance;
  6. Do not enquire about salary, holidays, bonuses etc. at the initial interview unless you are positive the interviewer wants to hire you;
  7. Finally do not slouch, mumble, smoke, or answer that mobile phone you forgot to turn off.
Gareth says that candidates should “be realistic and aligned to the market; as to what your level of experience can achieve. Remember the regional bargaining culture, be prepared to negotiate but back it with facts and objective reasons.
“Be balanced in your appraisal of any offer (is it purely financial or simply the medium term goal?). Remember where you are, as it’s important to recognise the regional competition for your skill-set”.
Remember that everyone has to have a job interview; so prepare well, relax, and don’t look at it as an interrogation, treat it as, like Gareth says, “an open forum for two-way information flow”. By adapting your approach, you won’t need to try to look cool and nonchalant, because you will do naturally.
